Importance of Early Attachment

Attachment is the deep, enduring emotional feeling of being connected to another person. Beginning in the first hours of life, newborn babies begin to develop their first and most important attachment to another human being…their mother. Developing a positive attachment between baby and caregiver early in life is particularly important for children as they grow, develop, and form relationships with others. Children with secure attachments tend to be more cooperative and sociable later in life, and tend to be more resilient than children who do not have secure attachments to a primary caregiver. Without this positive, secure attachment to a caregiver, children are at high risk for many developmental, emotional and social problems that will affect them throughout their lives.

It is common for children in medical settings to feel some degree of anxiety or fear. A natural response of parents may be to hush their children and discourage crying. “There is nothing to be afraid of,” right?
Everyone knows that trips to the doctor’s office are not always a walk in the park. Parents will be happy to know that with some advance preparation and a little extra TLC at the doctor’s office, visits can be much easier for everyone!
